Sometimes a great product isn't enough

The Treo 600 is fantastic. I've been using every new generation of handheld devices since the Newton MessagePad (yes, I am old), and the new Treo is the only "smart" device that does what it's supposed to without either absurd compromises or hourly reboots. It's not perfect -- the digital camera stinks -- but it is quite usable.

Unfortunately, even a fantastic product isn't enough for a company to bank on these days. According to TheStreet.com (another dot-com entity that has outlived the dot-com era) palmOne (the former Palm Inc., which recently acquired Handspring) is laying off 12% of its workforce. Its stock is suffering a similar kick to the teeth today.
